Kindness Project: Roman

In room 4 we have been participating in the kindness project. This involves sharing compliments about our classmates with them. We are trying to compliment aspects of their personality and are learning to be specific when giving compliments.

Roman was lucky enough to be our first student to participate in the compliments project in person. He sat in front the board while the rest of the class wrote compliments about him. At the end he stood up and turned around to see what we had written.

Malo e lelei! Last Friday was out Tongan Language Week closing assembly. This years theme is Ke Tu'uloa 'a e lea faka-Tonga 'i Aotearoa, which means Sustaining the Tonga Language in Aotearoa

We were lucky enough to hear beautiful Tongan speeches and watch incredible performances by our students in team 4 and 5.

Room 4 Literacy: I Am

At the start of the term Room 4 literacy crafted their own I am poems. We started by writing our poems down, trying to think beyond our selves in the literal classroom and instead thinking of our dreams, culture and wonderings...

Next we illustrated our poetry using a colour of our choice.

Check out our writing on the slides below.

Our Class Treaty

Respect
We understand that we all learn differently, come from different cultures and have different experiences. This is what makes us, us! We show respect to one another by communicating clearly, actively listening, showing support, being kind and celebrating mistakes.

Responsibility
We set goals for ourselves and strive to achieve them. We take leadership opportunities and carry ourselves with dignity. We have ambition, integrity and enjoy being our age.
We also have self respect and know when to manage ourselves - we must think before we speak!

Positivity
We contribute to the vibe in room 4! We are honest, kind and trustworthy. We big people up and don't put them down.

Participation

We participate in all activities. We contribute to class discussions, try our best, never give up and include everyone.

Measurement Challenges

Today Room 4 participated in measurement challenges to support both our maths focus on measurement and the development of our class treaty.

This series of challenges had a different focus each - height, mass and even some geometry. We discussed concepts such as certain shapes being more suited to baring weight than others. We also recognised that a strong base is needed when trying to increase the height of a tower.

The students worked fantastically together. Mrs stone mixed everyone up which let everyone get to know each other a bit better. We communicated clearly, negotiated and problem solved collaboratively.

We were then able to come up with more ideas for our class treaty!

Compliments Project Rylan

This week we once again participated in the compliments project, this time for Rylan. Rylan has been off sick so we thought it would be nice to send him some kind thoughts. We are also finding it easier to give genuine, specific compliments to people outside of the room, although this will change very soon!

Fun With Harold!

For the past three weeks we have been visiting Harold and Sylvia at the Life Caravan. This years focus has been the brain!

In our first session we learnt the difference between fixed and growth mindsets. We also learnt about the areas if the brain and their different roles.

Next we learnt about friendship. We discussed having a positive self esteem and positive relationships.

In our final session we talked about our identity and different personality types. We had a great time with Harold this term - thank you Sylvia!

Farewell Rongomatane!

We have had our fair share of goodbyes this year in Room 4. Our latest went to Rongo, who as a year eight was with our class for two years and will be missed.

However, his goodbye presented us with a great opportunity- to start the compliments project! This is a project where class members take turns to give positive, thoughtful compliments to a student by writing them on the whiteboard behind them.

This is a great example of what it should look like. The compliments are specific and describe Rongos strengths.

We hope you have an amazing time at your new school Rongo!

Mass and Capacity

Today Room 4 learnt about Mass and Capacity. To support us to build our understanding, we completed rotations to experience measuring the mass and capacity of a range of objects.

"For my group’s first rotation we were tasked to measure and weigh different items in grams and ml. For our items we could choose from a book, a whiteboard marker, a “no fishing” sign from our fish tank, a hand sanitizer bottle, a pack of paper clips and a pencil. We weighed them in grams.

...For our third and last rotation we got to measure with more measuring cups along with an actual cup/mug a bowl and syringes and more containers. I honestly think that this rotation was my favourite out of them all because I didn’t know that there were so many ways to measure out liquids and other stuff. "

What makes a good learner?

Today our literacy class discussed the difference between learning and behaviour. We realised that our behaviour has an impact on our learning. However, we also considered the fact that sometimes staying silent and sitting up nicely (or appearing well behaved) isn't enough to support us in our learning.

We each created a word cloud of ideas of what makes a good learner and shared our ideas: we had heaps in common!

These were our common themes:

Better Together

Today Room 4 continued to develop our class treaty. We participated in our first mini class debate, in which every learner had the opportunity to share their opinions. We did a fantastic job justifying our opinions and being willing to share our ideas with others.

This afternoon we played a game of 'hand soccer'. This is always hilarious and gave us a chance to work with each other while getting our bodies moving. This game involves a lot more skill than it might seem at first - experience in netball and basketball seemed to pay off!

Art Works

This term we will be focussing on The Arts. Our overarching inquiry question is: how do we tell a story through the arts?

We kicked off the term with our immersion assembly, where each team presented an item to introduce the theme 'Art Works'. Check out some highlights below:

"My favourite item had to be the Team 4 item.
Team 4’s item was about making art in different ways such as
Photography, Music, and Dancing.
I liked their item because it was fun and creative in many different ways." Lynette

"My favourite was the team 5 item because I’m biased. They cosplayed beauty and the beast and they reenacted the song (Beauty and the Beast) and the scene from the movie. Mr Wiseman played Belle and Mr Moran was the beast." Chaun

"Honestly my favourite one out of the teams was team 1. Each of the teachers made a painting about how they were feeling. Mrs Lal did a happy one,Mrs Dwyer did a scary one I think and Miss Shirley did a tired one. They also used different colours to paint their paintings. My favourite out of the paintings would have to be Mrs Lal's." Angelica

Welcome to Term 3!

Today Mrs Stone returned to Room 4 to take over from Miss Hall who will be teaching in Dubai - she will be missed!

To restart our year we played some team building games and discussed our class values. We will start to co-construct a treaty that will support us for the rest of the year and to set the year sevens up for success in 2023.
