Week 3/8!

Today we all returned to school after the long weekend. It was great to have a rest and to visit family over this time, so we returned to school with lots of enthusiasm!

In Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. After reviewing last weeks learning, we started making our own nets for 3D shapes. This will come in real handy later in the week as we try to create our own packaging for a baking company!

In Kiwi sport we started Skateboarding! This was a blast and everyone was at least able to skate a few metres by the end of the lesson (while some people were already learning tricks!). It was awesome having the opportunity to try something new.

Spread Kindness

Today in Hauora we discussed stereotypes and the messages that we hear in the media, pop culture and society. We discussed that stereotypes are generalisations about a group, similar to labels. We watched this speech by Joshua Iosefa on the topic.

Then it was time to give compliments and say positive things instead! We launched into our second kindness project session, this time about Jane and Jahzara. Check out the lesson in action:

                

3D Shapes!

Today Room 4 maths started learning about 3D shapes. We have already learnt heaps about the properties of 2D shapes, so we found this quite straight forward.

We watched a video about faces, edges and vertices. Then we created our own shapes out of plasticine and examined their properties, counting the edges and vertices of them.

Compliments Project

Today we learnt about the compliments project. We discussed how giving and receiving compliments make us feel good; they contribute to our taha hinengaro and taha whanau.

It can sometimes feel awkward giving people compliments, sometimes we make jokes instead of telling people how we really feel. To get us used to complimenting others, we took part in the compliments project.

We had one student (Jacob) leave the room while we filled up the whiteboard with compliments for him. It was awesome seeing his reaction when he read what we had to say about him.

Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa

Talofa Lava! This week is Samoan language week or Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa. The theme for this year is 'Tapena sou ōso mo lau malaga' which in English means 'Prepare yourself a gift for your travels'.

            

This morning in our assembly we sang a beautiful song in Samoan and Mrs Tele'a told us a little about the Fa'a Samoa. We learnt about the expression teu le va, which is about the relational space between people.

Perfect Polygons

In Maths this week we have been learning about 2D shapes. We have learnt about the properties of shapes, such as lines of symmetry and angles. We have also learnt about grouping shapes into categories. One of these categories were polygons, which are shapes with many angles.

We made our own polygons out of matchsticks. We started with shapes like a square and pentagon. Then AJ tried to create the largest polygon he could by making a shape with over 20 sides! He was only limited by the size of his table,  but we had a great time learning the name for shapes with so many sides.

First Day Back

Today was the first day back to school! One of the first people to walk into Room 4 was Lee. Read his diary entry here:

When I walked into school I felt happy because I could see my teacher  and my friends were cool. When I got to my class I was sad because It was only me and AJ there. Then more people came and It was cool. After that we played silent ball and then we went to our math class. It was amazing!
